AI Behavior and Intelligent Pathfinding

Completed an academic research project focused on AI Behavior and Intelligent Pathfinding Algorithms in Game Development, centered around improving the efficiency, realism, and performance of NPC navigation systems within large-scale game environments. The project explored advanced AI movement systems and pathfinding optimization techniques with the goal of reducing computational overhead and memory consumption while maintaining believable and natural NPC behaviors in real-time interactive worlds.
A major component of the research involved developing modifications to the traditional A* (A-Star) pathfinding algorithm in order to optimize both navigation realism and memory usage. The research focused on improving how NPCs calculated and managed movement paths, reducing unnecessary recalculations, optimizing traversal logic, and minimizing the processing load created by large numbers of simultaneously active AI agents. The system was designed to maintain smooth navigation behavior while significantly improving runtime performance in complex environments.
The project also included extensive work with Unity3D NavMesh systems, including NavMesh integration, optimization, and dynamic navigation management for large interactive environments. I researched and implemented optimized support systems, AI cores, and behavioral modifiers that improved NPC decision-making and movement responsiveness while reducing the resource costs typically associated with large AI populations roaming through open-world or highly interactive scenes.
A key achievement of the project was the successful implementation of a scalable AI management system capable of handling multiple NPCs moving simultaneously within a game world while maintaining efficient memory usage and smooth gameplay performance. The research addressed common game development challenges related to CPU load, memory allocation, navigation bottlenecks, and AI responsiveness, especially in environments containing numerous active roaming entities.
The project combined algorithmic research, AI behavior modeling, pathfinding optimization, performance engineering, and practical Unity3D implementation to create a more efficient and realistic NPC movement system suitable for real-time game environments. Through this work, I demonstrated strong capabilities in game AI research, systems optimization, algorithm development, navigation systems, and performance-focused game engineering within an academic R&D context.
